Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Oberholzer House

For the Oberholzer family, Richard Neutra designed a home with living quarters that embraced a view of the mountains, placing the master bedroom on the west side of the house and the children’s bedrooms on the east. Located in Rolling Hills, the house was required to have a pitched roof according to neighborhood regulations. As a result, the house had varied ceiling heights, with a tall living room space flanked by two lower soffits, one of which housed a system that distribute illumination indirectly. By aligning these soffits with the ridge beam, Neutra offset them and maintained the design’s asymmetry.
