Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Schaarman House

The Z-shaped plan of the Schaarman family’s house creates the sense of an extended space. The interiors are only a single room deep, offering views and access to surrounding terraces and the landscape beyond. Deep overhangs of redwood accelerate movement toward the outdoors. The land is outfitted with broad paths that stretch throughout the site. One might pass from the living room’s dynamic, ashlar-clad fireplace to the pool, sited to embrace the cooling air of prevailing breezes, to a long stone path. Set on a large, Los Angeles lot, the house is joined by a structure serving as a garage and storage space.
