Mr. and Mrs. Corwin Hansch House

Located on a narrow promontory at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains, the Hansch family’s house is set in the midst of an idyllic olive grove. The entrance to the split-level house is on the lower floor, where a foyer with thirteen-foot ceilings greets visitors. After ascending stairs, one reaches the living room, which is paved in brick to create a continuous space with the terrace outside. From the living room, views also include a rooftop terrace to the south which could be flooded with water to serve as a cooling element and provide a dynamic source of reflected light, although bacteria and mold prevented the continued use of this water feature. The galley kitchen offers expansive views of the nearby mountains. Throughout, the interiors are embellished by wall finishes in Japanese ash plywood and citrus colored paint.
