Maurice Heller House

Maurice Heller’s house is designed in a U-shape, with one leg rising to a second story. A pool separates the house from the street, and visitors cross a bridge that hangs over this pool to reach the entrance. Richard Neutra established a fluid boundary between outdoor and indoor spaces by extending a planter from the garden patio into the house. The interior spaces have a sense of warmth with radiantly heated cork floors and tongue-and-groove redwood ceilings. The house is designed with long-term visitors in mind, and one guest room even had its own refrigerator. When the owners were alone in the home, the bedroom wing for visiting children or grandchildren could easily be closed off.
