Kester Avenue Elementary School

Richard Neutra’s design for the Kester Avenue Elementary School is rooted in the ground via its long brick walls which engage the site in various ways, including maintaining an even height as the ground inclines downward. The eight buildings, which include an administration building, spaces for twenty-one classrooms, and outside lunch and assembly areas, are interconnected through covered ramps and walkways. Like Neutra’s other designs, Kester Avenue Elementary School features characteristic metal louvered blinds and spiderlegs, while its classrooms offer easy access to the outdoors, something Neutra continuously prioritized in his school plans.
