James F. and Olive Logar House

Olive Logar described the home she shared with her husband, James F. Logar, as “a beautiful little ship at anchor.” The Logars approached Richard Neutra for the project after seeing his 1949 Time magazine cover. The L-shaped house is made of white cement plaster and redwood. A large, open-plan central wing accommodated living, dining, and study quarters for the three, home-schooled, Logar children. Flanking this central wing were a kitchen and garage on one side and bedrooms on the other. The kitchen was designed with special equipment including vegetable presses and a two-chamber cool room and refrigerator to provide for the Logars’ vegetarian diet. Personal terraces extended from each bedroom and the living room. The carport emerged from the house, creating the effect of layered planes along its façade.
