Frieda Hauswirth House

Richard Neutra’s hand is evident even in his most small-scale designs, such as the Officer’s Tea Hut of 1915 and Frieda Hauswirth’s house of 1940. Here, Neutra imagined a tiny redwood cabin of only 872 square feet with sharp right angles that engage the curving hillside behind it. His client, a writer, paid only $2,700 for the building’s construction, possibly the lowest amount paid for a house by any of Neutra’s clients.
