Donald M. Cole House

Richard Neutra establishes a juxtaposition between the rectilinear shape of the Cole’s house and its kidney-shaped pool. Neutra’s clients were interested in East Asian influences, and the winding path leading towards the house draws inspiration from this, offering visitors the opportunity to pause and consider their place in the landscape. The dynamic exchange between the built and natural environment is best exemplified by the relationship between a concrete bridge that spans the lily pond and the spider legs that frame it after traveling down from a deep overhang that extends from the house.
