Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America Union Building

The building referred to by Neutra as the “new labor temple” included an auditorium for 600 persons. It had Neutra-designed furniture throughout, including ash magazine benches of 1″ x 1″ slats supported by aluminum bars, and a mural designed by Roberto Burle Marx (for which he was paid $250 according to office files). As with many of his commercial structures, the exterior facade included vertical aluminum louvers; the project files contain a magazine article with similar louvers proposed by architect Paul Lazlo.
