Eddie Jones on Design for Respect and Well Being on the Southern Border

The Neutra Institute for Survival Through Design welcomed Eddie Jones, Founding Principal, Jones Studio, architects to talk about the firm’s contemporary approach to designing Land Ports of Entry in Southern Arizona and California. The lecture took place at the historic Neutra Office Building, on Saturday, October 12th, 2024. Jones links Richard J. Neutra’s ideas about biorealism and wellbeing through architectural design as applied to a contemporary architectural problem.

The original ports were built in the 1970s, and have been overwhelmed by traffic growth and security protocols. Jones Studio’s new port designs are a study in balancing these needs with the experience of its occupants: necessary surveillance with compassionate interactions, operational efficiency with a healthy work environment and economic opportunity with sustainable solutions. Their projects are now a model for land point of entry design for the US General Services Administration (GSA) and Customs and Boarder Protection.

Housing Vienna: Lessons for Los Angeles

In early 2024, the Institute partnered with Friends of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles (FORT:LA) and Frances Anderton for Housing Vienna: Lessons for Los Angeles. Participants included Beatriz Stambuk-Torres, Manager, GPLA Vienna Housing Field Study for the Global Policy Leadership Academy; John Ellis, AIA; Michael Lehrer, FAIA; Anthony Fontenot, author; Cristian Ahumada, Executive Director and CEO of Holos Communities; Prophet Walker, Co-Founder and CEO, Treehouse Co-Living; journalist Frances Anderton; and Dr. Raymond Neutra, in thoughtful discussion about the nexus of the present and the past.
