Jay and Catharine Hinds House

Richard Neutra designed Jay and Catharine Hinds’ house to step down a hillside. The rear façade is composed of wood, glass, and stucco which each occupy their own plane. At the base of the hill, the house is set at a right angle to a storage shed, while a spider leg reinforces this intersection. A year after the completion of the house, the Hinds wrote to Neutra with memories of their numerous interactions and his site visits during the construction process and after it was finished. In addition to completing the original construction, the builder Fordyce “Red” Marsh was also responsible for an addition for the Hinds two years later.
